Short-Term Running Goals:

Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

Long-Term Running Goals:

QUALIFIED FOR BOSTON! April 16, 2011

Ran Boston on April 14, 2012!

Personal:

Married, 40 year old, mother of four.

"In truth, runners don't race other runners.  They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares.  And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better." Running for His Life by Michael Hall

Went to the doc today.  MRI looked good.  Only problem was edema and extra blood flow to the area, but other than that looked good so he said to start out slow....run 8 minutes to start.  I ran a little more than a mile in 8 minutes.  I walked the last mile.  I thought I would have stayed in a little better shape.  I was huffing and puffing!  I wasn't thinking and grabbed my fav running shorts and a tank and went to my moms for a run.  When I put the shorts on my 5 extra pounds made them feel tooooo tight!  I can't wait to run that off!

My foot still doesn't feel right.  The nerve that keeps zinging and making half of my foot tingle all of the time is driving me crazy!

San Francisco was such a fun vacation.  I would love to live there.  I have never been in a city with so many runners out at all hours of the day.  Running the wharf and across the Golden Gate Bridge is now added on to my bucket list!

Ran 2.55 in 21 minutes.  Rode the bike for one hour.

I am so upset with my dr. right now.  He is suppose to be one of the best orthopedic foot docs around here!  My hub is a doc and just printed off my mri report for me.  He just called me and said that there is not excess blood flow to the area or edema (like the doc said) but there is a cyst.  They don't know if the cyst is synovial or ganglion but there is a cyst right in the area at the top of my foot where I have been having pain and tingling.

The doc did tell me that there was a cyst in my foot, but it was not in the area of pain it was farther up and nothing to worry about.  I don't even think he really read my report! My husband says that he sees these types of cysts all of the time and that you can't tell what kind of cyst they are until they are taken out.  He said if it is bothering me I should just go and have it taken out so that I can start running again without pain.  Maybe I didn't even have a stress fracture after all? I am so irritated!

Ran 3, walked 1.  I should really only be up to 1.5 miles right now, but 1.5 hardly seems even worth getting out for.  Rode the bike for 1 hr and core work.

RLRF is my new plan.  Thanks IJR/JG/flatlander/derhammer for all of the fun info.  When I went to a physical therapist in June/July for my bursitis/ITband syndrome stuff after my last marathon, he told me about this type of running and how you can actually get better results by running less, just training harder and cross training.  I just really didn't believe him and besides...I just love to run.

I have a friend that is a mother of 8, just turned 40 and she qualified for Boston this year too. She was telling me how she just didn't have time to run every day so she tried the run less, run faster program and only ran one long run a week.  She said that when she did her runs, they were really hard and not a lot of fun, but she used her time well.  She said that when she qualified she was holding back, walked quite a bit, and qualified by 4 minutes just like I did, but she felt great and wasn't even sore.  I couldn't walk for 3 days after qualifying and I pushed myself the entire last 13 and felt like I was running on broken legs the last 5 miles! ha!

I am going to try it.  I just need to get my bones, and muscles built back up again so that I can start to train! yeeeehooooo!
