Short-Term Running Goals:

Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

Long-Term Running Goals:

QUALIFIED FOR BOSTON! April 16, 2011

Ran Boston on April 14, 2012!

Personal:

Married, 40 year old, mother of four.

"In truth, runners don't race other runners.  They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares.  And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better." Running for His Life by Michael Hall

Ran 3, walked 1.  I should really only be up to 1.5 miles right now, but 1.5 hardly seems even worth getting out for.  Rode the bike for 1 hr and core work.

RLRF is my new plan.  Thanks IJR/JG/flatlander/derhammer for all of the fun info.  When I went to a physical therapist in June/July for my bursitis/ITband syndrome stuff after my last marathon, he told me about this type of running and how you can actually get better results by running less, just training harder and cross training.  I just really didn't believe him and besides...I just love to run.

I have a friend that is a mother of 8, just turned 40 and she qualified for Boston this year too. She was telling me how she just didn't have time to run every day so she tried the run less, run faster program and only ran one long run a week.  She said that when she did her runs, they were really hard and not a lot of fun, but she used her time well.  She said that when she qualified she was holding back, walked quite a bit, and qualified by 4 minutes just like I did, but she felt great and wasn't even sore.  I couldn't walk for 3 days after qualifying and I pushed myself the entire last 13 and felt like I was running on broken legs the last 5 miles! ha!

I am going to try it.  I just need to get my bones, and muscles built back up again so that I can start to train! yeeeehooooo!

Go for it! RLRF sounds like a worthwhile pursuit - :-)

Your friend isn't Cathy Ford, is it?

You guys have got me curious about the program! Too bad that we will be in the middle of winter here in Idaho and cycling won't work for me. Wondering what other forms of cross training would be good. I can blow my heart rate up cycling just by pushing the pace. There is probably options out there, not sure what would be equivalent to the running thing.

My cousins wife trained for Ogden 26.2 by running in place... seriously. I need to submit the article to SI. CrazySauce...

Burt -- Nope, she is a Huntsman. Her bro-in-law is the one running for President. Small world eh?

Rye -- It is hard to do anything during the Utah/Idaho freezing winters!

Oreo--That is crazy sauce!! Are you serious?

Steam! I love it! Nice run today and hope that the new training is the ticket for you :)

Sounds like a great program for cramming some good training into a short amount of time.

Okay Steam... I ran my first race this weekend after starting the RLRF program and set a new PR for my Half Marathon. Although I had to jump into the training and only have about 4 weeks in the program I believe it helped me suceed. Comming off the race I now believe I can hit a 3:16 marathon time. I'm excited for you to get well and start the program too!!! Let's do it!!!

Hey, I didn't realize this was an 'official' thing. I'm kind of working my own plan of this during the off season. Glad to know it's worked for others and that my efforts and thinking aren't too far off in left field! :)

Glad to see you back running and making life work!!

Amy! So after reading through your stuff and I just run's stuff, I realized that this is the same thing I am now doing. I am running less, but sprinting on and off on the days I do run, and cross training on the other days. But I am lifting more to and so that is the only different part. But it does work. This is called HIIT training. It burns 9x the amount of fat in a day than steady state cardio...and if it's done in the proper intervals, it increases your speed BIG TIME!

And that's what I'm going for...."Go Big Or Go Home...!!!". ;-)

Going to look at your race IJR! I wish I was just in good enough shape to run 5 and not die!
