Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

"In truth, runners don't race other runners.  They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares.  And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. SWEARWORDS!  I have unbelievable luck!  Instead of just tearing up, I have been sobbing today.  Felt great this morning, my foot has been feeling better, knee and hip have still been having stabbing pains now and again, but nothing serious.  Met my nephew and ran 3 in 23, walked a bit and ran another three in 23.  I felt like I was going to puke so we walked for about a half mile before we started another repeat.  After about a half mile my knee started hurting so bad that I had to stop and then I couldn't put any weight on it or bend it at all without HORRIBLE pain.  I half walked straight kneed and hobbled trying not to cry holding on to my nephew.   I called my husband and he was NOT HAPPY!  He called in a personal favor to an orthopedic friend of his that operated on Tiger Woods a few years ago.  My appt is at 4:30 today.  I will most likely not be running Boston.  I am so heartbroken!  I am not training for any more marathons.  I am only running halves from now on.  My body just can't handle training for fulls! :(!!!!!

Sorry steam...I kinda feel the same way! Your pain sounds just like what I felt when I had the bone spur. It broke off and was floating around and would cause extreme pain and it would basiclly lock up. I'll pray you get it figured out today and it won't be anything serious!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 15:44:40 from 98.247.27.122

Oh no! I'll be praying for you too. Let us know what the Doc says...

From Kelli on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 15:57:06 from 71.219.85.126

OH MAN! I am saying swear words for you! I am so sorry, this sucks. No other way to put it! I read your stuff for the week, but I only have like 5 seconds and I have to get out the door to soccer. Is it just your foot (which is migrating to the knee?) I have had PF really bad and I started to run funny to relieve the pain and ended up hurting my knee as well. CRAP!

Let me know how the appointment goes today!

Oh, and tell your husband things could be worse: if you did not run you might go crazy and get fat (as if that would happen to you!!!)

From Steam8 on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 18:01:29 from 166.70.55.77

The doc could not have been more kind or wonderful! He saw me after a full day of surgery! I have torn cartilage behind my knee cap. I have to take 800mg of Ibuprofen 3X a day until I see him again next week. I have to ride the bike for 10-15 minutes a day at the hotels that we stay at this week to help smooth it out. I should stay off of my feet as much as I can and absolutely no running. If I am still having bad pain in one week, he will drain my knee and give me a cortisone shot right before the marathon. He ran the marathon before there were qualifying times when he lived in Boston during his training and said it was an unforgettable and fun experience and he said he would get me there one way or another. :)

From Steam8 on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 18:03:15 from 166.70.55.77

He said that he normally would not do this for someone, but because it was Boston, he didn't want me to miss it. He said that I do not have running knees and shouldn't be running high miles and that this would have happened sooner or later. He told me to take up biking. :(

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 18:23:36 from 98.247.27.122

That is so awesome that you got a good doc! A little cortisone and a lot of vitamin I will do wonders for that knee. Follow doctors orders and let him get you there :)

From RAD on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 19:00:46 from 98.202.23.178

Oh Amy, this breaks my heart! I'm glad you found a good doc though and that he got you in and understands your plight and is going to get you there. One last Boston to cap it off, then we can train for a half ironman together :) Got it?!? It is in Provo in August - lots of biking and swimming, because I know you'll kick trash at the run.

Follow those orders to the T this week!!! You gotta get there. Do it for me - I'll never qualify, so I have to live vicariously through you awesome people!

From Kelli on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 21:53:34 from 71.219.85.126

YEAH for a good doctor who understands the crazy runner mentality and the need to run Boston!!!!

From Dan on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 23:37:32 from 24.209.83.20

Wow, a whirlwind of emotions I am sure. Praying for the best!

From DLTheo on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 09:35:35 from 76.28.161.119

So sorry Amy. I hope you get better soon and are able to get to Boston and enjoy it. Praying for you.

From flatlander on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 13:45:07 from 76.31.26.153

So sorry to hear about the cartilage tear, but that is a fantastic doctor though. Most would have grounded you for sure. Just run your best in Boston and soak it in, you earned it.

From Lily on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 14:01:41 from 67.199.178.210

Do you know who Lindsey Dunkley is? Fastest female in Utah. She cannot train over 45 miles a week. She can only run half marathons or she gets injured. she said every time she tries, she gets injured. She would slam dunk a marathon distance if she could run the full 26. You're not alone gilry.

From Rye on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 12:30:02 from 174.27.71.245

Sorry about the tear, but how fortunate you are to have a doctor that understands. Enjoy the journey along the way. Biking can be a blast! A great supplement to your running. Look at IJR! I biked exclusively for years before I took up running. I still bike and find it a great tool to keep your fitness up. good luck

From Andrea on Tue, Apr 03, 2012 at 20:20:50 from 67.177.21.60

Hope the doc appt went okay. So disappointing about Boston - I honestly believe that 50% of the battle is just getting to the starting line healthy. Keep your head up - half marathons are way better anyways!

From Smooth on Wed, Apr 04, 2012 at 15:13:54 from 174.27.212.157

Oh Amy I am so sorry to hear about the knee. Sounds like you got a great doc. to get you to Boston. Hope you are enjoying your time at D.C. and not stress over Boston.

If it helps you feel better...I am in NO shape to run Boston this year. I got a stress fracture in my foot on Feb 11, did not run for 3 weeks then slowly get back to running the last few weeks. Am now dealing with asthma and breathing issue. My longest run was 18 miles on Sat. that took 3hr 10min and was hard! With that said, I'm going to have the slowest and funnest Boston because just being there is half the battle. Plus you have to EXPERIENCE Boston! :)

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, Apr 05, 2012 at 13:39:07 from 174.253.220.158

Updates, we need updates Amy. How is that knee doing with the biking?

From timp on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 06:40:16 from 99.110.188.230

Glad the doc was understanding and will help you get to Boston. It is definitely something not to miss.

From flatlander on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 08:47:55 from 76.31.26.153

Any news? Hope the diagnosis wasn't as bad as you feared. Was really sorry to hear about that bit of bad luck.

From gdoc on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 10:04:59 from 74.211.6.160

Best of luck to you Steam... Hope all is right with the world one way or another

From MaryMary on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 10:53:24 from 99.185.60.234

I'm so happy you have a good doctor and are still running Boston! Follow drs orders and I'm sure you will feel great. :) I'm still crossing my fingers that I can stay healthy and in one piece for one more week.

From Steam8 on Sun, Apr 08, 2012 at 07:41:10 from 166.70.55.77

My knee is still hurting. I can't run, sometimes I can't walk. Spring Break was so much fun, but really painful. I felt like an old, arthritic woman. I don't want to get old if this is in my future. I was walking slow and in pain in the back of the pack with my dad all week. I guess I have my dad's bad joints!

I will definitely be having surgery. I hope a cortisone shot can work wonders so that I will still be able to run the marathon. I am interested to see how I feel after not exercising for almost a month and then running a marathon. I can't even ride the bike with resistance and I am only suppose to ride it for 10-15 minutes a day. :( I ate alllll week long and put on at least 10 pounds. I am feeling fat, flabby and sad!

From Steam8 on Sun, Apr 08, 2012 at 07:43:40 from 166.70.55.77

Thanks to all of you.....I don't know what I would do without the blog. My husband is sick of hearing me talk about running and not being able to run. He doesn't get it at all. He thinks I am nutty....which I am......It is one of the things I like most about myself and all of you on here! XO

Happy Easter everyone! What a wonderful and amazing day!!! When I think about the true meaning of life here, not running Boston doesn't matter. It just makes life more fun to have crazy goals.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Apr 08, 2012 at 15:55:40 from 69.131.141.92

Hope you can still have a fun trip and enjoy the race. Don't give up on running completely though! You never know.. Good luck.

From Dan on Sun, Apr 08, 2012 at 20:26:58 from 24.209.83.20

Happy Easter! I think you have the right perspective. Enjoy the trip and it's sounds the doc has your interest at heart. I love crazy goals!

From Kelli on Mon, Apr 09, 2012 at 09:53:50 from 71.219.98.16

All runners are nutty, right? It is something in our genes!

I am sad to hear that you are not feeling at all better. I really hope the cortisone shot gives you some serous relief!
