Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

I'm not really sure about the milage today.  I might be more like 23??  My Garmin and my friend's weren't accurate since we both turned them off a couple of times and forgot to turn them back on. ha! Whoops!

I ran about 21 with my friend in the morning and a little later in the day.  We started in Holladay and ran to Sugarhouse Park and around a couple of times and up through the Country Club and back to Highland High for the drinking fountain and back to Holladay.  I wasn't dead at the end of the run and another 5 would have been fine.  :)

Does anyone else have this problem???  My feet are so sore!  I am not injured, but I have been afraid to run the past two weeks because my heels feel bruised and the sides of my feet hurt and the tissue in my feet is tender.  I think all of the pounding is just a bit much on my poor feet!  I have run 2 X 18 milers and 2 X 21 milers now, not to mention all of the teen long runs in between.   I was planning on running 8 to 10 tomorrow, but I think I am going to let my feet heal a bit.  I REALLY don't want to have an injury this close to Boston!!! Any advice?

I have been trying to eat high nutrient foot.  I have been blending tons of mixed greens, flax, berries and trying to keep my diet really clean and good.  I have tried to be a vegetarian and vegan before, but I just didn't feel good at all.  My body needs meat!  I try not to eat too much meat and keep most of it organic.  I always use and eat organic eggs.  Any advice on eating before Boston?

Another problem....I am terrified that I am going to turn into diarrhea lady durning the marathon.  I haven't had a problem with it this week (thank goodness), but I have lately been so sick during and after my runs.  The harder or longer they have been the worse it is for me.  Yesterday's run was great and I didn't have any problems, I am hoping for the best on race day and not hitting a POP every few miles!  Do you take any kind of Pepto or anti-diarrhea medicine  before a race or long run?  I am such a novice and I don't know how I qualified for Boston.  I am not a real runner, I just love to run! HELP :)

Sounds like you are a runner to me! You will do great at Boston with all of the long runs you have under your belt.

Great job on the 22 miler. :)

I put gel pads under the removable insoles of my shoes for a long time when my feet were giving me trouble. Just the cheap ones from walmart add a little cushion and made a big difference for me.

I also took pepto before my last marathon and didn't have any pitstops along the way. I don't see how it could hurt. Better safe than sorry :)

Wow...Miles, miles, miles...!!! I wish I could be up to 2x18 and 2x21 and feel good after the run! You always talk about others being in good shape--I think you're there!

Regarding the foot problem, maybe you need to lose some weight...Just Kidding-You look as skinny as a rail :-)

For the diarrhea I was thinking Duct Tape might help... :-(

Sorry, I'm just feeling sarcastic today, I wish I had some real answers for you!

From DLTheo on Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 15:32:59 from 76.28.161.119

Hopefully the heel pain is not the start of PF (Plantar Fasciitis). How many miles do you have on your current running shoes? The gel pads RT mentions should help. You can also ice your feet after your runs by freezing water bottles and then rolling them under your feet for a few minutes.

As for the GI distress, I can relate. I often have problems during and especially after long runs. It doesn't usually become a problem during races, though. One thing that helps is to make sure the day before you only eat foods that will pass through the body quickly - rice, gatorade, apple juice, certain fruits, candy. Then, try to "go" several times in the morning before the race. You should be pretty much empty by the start of the marathon.

Oh, and congrats on spelling "diarrhea" correctly!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 16:59:59 from 98.247.27.122

Strong coffee and a quick easy jog around the block will help get things moving on race morning too.

Burt would be impressed with the spelling in this thread, as well as all the potty talk. I wonder what's keeping him away?

I think Burt is mad at someone in our circle....I think it might be me :-(

Seriously? Or is this another duct tape comment? :)

From Steam8 on Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 17:48:35 from 166.70.55.77

You all are cracking me up! I love the duct tape idea. I would try it if I didn't think it would cause chaffing. I don't think that would help my running! ha!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 17:56:24 from 98.247.27.122

Glad we could provide some entertainment for you :) Seriously though, you are in great shape with all those long runs in the bank. Pretty soon it will be time to taper anyway. You are going to do great in Boston!

rattleT...you might be sorry for giving me all of that information when you see me at Boston and you pretend like you don't know me! ;)

JD...YES, Diarrhea lady! I wish it wasn't so, but I have had a few close calls lately that are making me have nightmares about Boston! ha!

From Steam8 on Fri, Mar 23, 2012 at 18:50:31 from 166.70.55.77

Haha! I never do and end up bloated and sick and about to explode on the run! I know...TMI!

Pepto and Gas-x for breakfast :)

What a great idea!!

From SlowJoe on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 20:37:27 from 69.131.141.92

Great long run!

If you keep eating greens and don't start eating some cheeseburgers, then you'll have to just go buy Depends undergarments. Then you can trust farts again.

From SlowJoe on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 20:38:17 from 69.131.141.92

But seriously, I've taken immodium before a run and it worked. Test it out first though.

From Rye on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 13:45:39 from 174.27.125.137

Not sure I want to comment but can't resist. The heal pain could be relieved by stretching your calf muscles. That has worked for me in the past. I would give it a try!

For the second part.... I got on a kick of Crystal Lite a while ago and had the worst case of schnicky ..... Then I read that it is a side effect to aspartame. What's in your Diet Pepsi? Seriously, it was bad!

From RAD on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 14:46:57 from 98.202.23.178

If your feet are sore (and it isn't Plantar, which tender heels especially in the morning is very indicative of such) you may have foot-strike hemolysis which is when the pounding of your feet (from just regular running) destroys blood cells and causes you to become low in iron. It may also cause the foot pain you are talking about. Juliec has been dealing a lot with low iron levels and has some good suggestions with supplementation and the right kind etc to do for runners and quick absorption etc. Just an idea.

As for the pop talk...well, I know that a lot of runners take some Immodium AD before/during runs to keep the runs away. Try it on a few runs and see how it goes?

Oh, awesome job on this run! Can't wait for y'all to blow it away at Boston!

From Lily on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 21:09:07 from 74.82.64.34

Amy- my feet always start hurting in the exact way you describe when I'm marathon training. When I get to that point, I start running every other day so I don't perpetuate an injury. Every other day won't hurt your fitness at this point. I also got new inserts for all my regular shoes for cushiness. About the intestinal stuff. I take immodium AD in the morning before a marathon. Works like a charm! Say no to the runs HA!

From Dan on Mon, Mar 26, 2012 at 21:50:07 from 24.209.83.20

I also agree that immodium before the race is safe and effective. If I was worried, I'd go that route.

From MaryMary on Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 19:59:41 from 99.185.60.234

Talk about novice, my advice was going to be to check out what mile markers will have port-a-potties. That's what I did in Pocatello and tried to squeeze my cheeks until I made it to the bathroom! This is any area where I need advice too. It was funny reading all the comments.

I think you have already put in your miles and resting your feet a little will help. You are in great shape and also eating well. You are going to do great in Boston!
