Short-Term Running Goals:

Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

Ran Boston on April 14, 2012!

"In truth, runners don't race other runners.  They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares.  And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. I ran 5 in 45 minutes this morning at my  moms.  I wanted to stop and walk before I even hit a mile! I was huffing and puffing so hard that I about cried!

Six weeks without running and I am completely out of shape again!  The elliptical and bike do NOTHING to keep your endurance up!  I looked at my Garmin at mile 4 and realized that if I ran the last mile in under 8 then I would be at 45 minutes for 5 miles.  I ran as fast as I could with both knees stabbing me and got to 5 in 45 and honestly thought I was going to pass out.  Everything started to get dark and I was a sweaty mess....and I never really sweat! SAD, SAD DAY!

I ran an extra mile tonight with my kids at Dimple Dell trail near Granite Park with lots of horse poo poo.  My right knee was stabbing me. Why won't it get better? I am feeling pretty sad for myself tonight! :(

I am so sorry you are having "one of those poo filled running days".

Do you have a foam roller?? (http://www.performbetter.com/detail.aspx_Q_ID_E_5183_A_CategoryID_E_235)

They are cheap and could be the answers to your prayers (though it won't feel like it at first).

Here's hoping for a better day tomorrow!!

Oh your knee is going to get better alright. It might just need a longer rest than you'd like. I know, I know, it sucks! I had a hard time running quick again after being out for 8 weeks. But even if you can run but it's slow, I think that is awesome! Don't give up!

Ditto Bonnie! I have a foam roller and roll on it every evening. Best 25 dollars I've ever spent!

by the way, here is a dumb joke to help cheer you up:

There were three fathers to be in a hospital waiting room, waiting for their babies to be born.

The first nurse comes out and tells the first father, "Congratulations you're the father of twins!" He says, “Great! I am the manager for the Minnesota Twins.”

The second nurse comes out and tells the second father, "Congratulations you're the father of triplets”! He says, "That's cool! I work for 3M."

The third father opens the window and jumps out.

The third nurse comes out, and asks, “Where's the third father?"

One of the other fathers said, "Oh he jumped out the window.”

The nurse asks, "Why?"

He replied, "He works for Seven Up!"

Stabby knees :(

Bonnie, you are a corny joke teller! Love it!

YES! My PT is not working so well! IT band feels great..just stabby knees!

I have a roller. I guess I better give it a try. It just hurt so stinking bad the first time I did it that I haven't done it since!

Glad you're out there at least. Your knees will get better, just make sure you don't push them too hard.

Were your knees "stabby" before? If your IT band is feeling better, doesn't that mean the PT is helping at least a little? I had all kinds of weird running pains after taking 6 weeks off a couple years ago.

I feel your pain! I agree with Lilster though - foam roller is a must...

:( :( :(

Hope it feels better soon Steam. I know you like to push because you're tough and it is your nature, but I would just take it easy as soon as you feel the pain starting.

Sucky!!!
