Short-Term Running Goals:

Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

Ran Boston on April 14, 2012!

"In truth, runners don't race other runners.  They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares.  And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better." Running for His Life by Michael Hall

I hiked up to Lake Blanche this morning with a brother, two sisters, a teenage niece and a nephew.  The nephew that I usually run with was suppose to come up with us too, but he cancelled at 6am.  He does that sometimes.  He missed out because it was BEAUTIFUL!  It is 3 miles up.  6 roundtrip.  I haven't been on this trail since last year.  After we got to the top I had to head back down.  I had a busy day ahead of me and I couldn't stay and go over to Lake Lillian and hang out and chat with my family like I wanted to.

I started to run down the trail and my left knee was killing me.  I tried to walk fast, slow, run, everything was hurting my knee.  I had planned on running from the trailhead home.  When I got to the bottom of the trail, my knee was hurting so bad that I didn't know how I was going to run the 8 miles home!  I thought I should probably not run on it and just wait for my fam to get down the trail.....but I didn't.  I had to get home.  My in-laws were having a bbq at noon for my birthday and my daughters bday this week.

I started running and it was hurting.  I kept hoping that my family would not stay up there for too long and they would pick me up on the way back to my house to pick up their cars.  My hub stopped to pick me up about 1.5 miles before I was home. He was headed to his moms. I have never been so happy to cut a training run short.  I usually can't stand to not finish what I have planned on running.  I am a bit smarter now that I used to be.  I would have ran hard on a hurting knee before.  I am really hoping I didn't damage anything that will make me have to stay off of my knee for a bit.  I only have two months to get in shape for St. George!

I think we get wiser as we go along. Good call on taking it easy. Better to miss a few miles on one run than miss many days of running.

Smart move, I hope it starts to feel better. Sounds like a cool run though.

Nice workout, sorry about the knee ... never good to be miles from home & have pain set in! Glad you hub rescued you from the last section, what took him so long! :) Hope the knee heals up, is that something new, or have you struggled with it before?

Sounds like you had a great time out there! Sorry about the knee though. Hammering down those kinda trails can really take it outta ya.

Way to be smart!! It really is hard not to finish when you've got a certain mileage in mind, but sometimes it's just not worth it! I hope your knee feels better soon :)
