Short-Term Running Goals:

Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

"In truth, runners don't race other runners.  They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares.  And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. 1 hr on the bike.....1 hr on the elliptical in my basement. YUCK!

I've had a busy week of kids and showing our house.  People like it again and are thinking about it.....this will be couple #4 in the past few months that are very interested and I am sure we will never hear from them again.  It is okay because my house was needing a good deep clean again.  I like it when I have to clean for a reason and not just my everyday routine!

I don't know what to do about my foot.  This is the first time I have been on the elliptical that the top half of my foot didn't tingle and I am not having any pain, but I have also been wearing my boot most of the week.  I am crossing my fingers!  I just wish someone would tell me what to do.  I really don't want to re-injure my foot, but I would really like to get back at it so I can be in good shape for Boston.

I called and can't get in to see my orthopedic doc for a month since it is not an emergent problem.   I have an old boyfriend that lives out of state that is a podiatrist.....I have even thought of sending off a message to ask him his opinion, but since he hates my guts, I guess that isn't a good idea either.  Wish I knew what to do! If I just had some patience and didn't care about getting out of shape, I am sure taking a couple of months off and doing nothing would do the trick! :(

How could anyone hate YOUR guts??

Pretty easy!

So you dumped him. You broke his little heart :(

From Steam8 on Sat, Oct 08, 2011 at 18:23:38 from 166.70.55.77

We broke up so many times...it is hard to remember. I am pretty sure he was the last one to do the dump! ha!

Just wait it out, there is a ton of time before Boston chica.

From Steam8 on Sat, Oct 08, 2011 at 18:29:20 from 166.70.55.77

I've been waiting it out since the middle of August! I wanted to do the Halloween Half this year and now it is looking like the Half Preggie Half is out for me too! :((

I know continuing to wait is not easy and I am guilty like you of pushing before the body is ready. Now, if you would like to hire me to tell you what to do, I'd be happy to do so! :p Slow and steady- get strong, Boston is a ways off and look forward to catching you there!

Are you running Boston this year Dan? I hope so! That would be so fun to see you there!

Wow, that's awesome cross training today. Be patient and heal fully for your Boston training. I know it's hard, but it will be worth it!!

Steam - give the foot time and rock the elliptical. That will keep you in shape. Didn't you just put the boot on again last week?

From Steam8 on Sun, Oct 09, 2011 at 12:52:58 from 166.70.55.77

Okay, okay...you are all making me feel better. I love this blog, it helps! I'll keep on with the bike and start with the elliptical now that it isn't hurting to workout on it.

It has been almost two months of no running. I'm just worried about starting all over again and being out of breath and out of shape and not being able to run a mile when I am finally better. I am getting old and getting in shape is hard to do!

I hate to say this from experience but be patient, bike, bike, bike and maybe elipitical...you've got to stay off of it long enough to let it heal. My daughter had to stay off her stress fractured foot for 8 weeks to allow it to heal. She biked, elipiticaled and swam and stayed in pretty good shape. Don't mean to preach but I really want to see you get healthy.

Don't know if you have access to a pool, but I hear aqua jogging is a great way to stay in shape while recovering from a stress fracture.

okay, here is my two cents for what it is worth: I have found that docs treat what is wrong and that is it. They will get rid of the pain and then send you on your way. A PT on the other hand will look at the overall functioning of all the combined muscles. Find where the weakness is that is causing the overall problem and help you fix that so that you not only heal faster, but better. When you come back your weaknesses are stronger to prevent a re-injury. They will give you exercises you can do while staying off the foot and x-training. My advice is to go see a PT. Everyone has a different opinion on them and which ones they like, but overall I find them much more helpful than the docs that give you pills or meds and send you on your way to heal. I have a great one at TOSH if you are interested. He is a runner and works primarily with runners, so he understands our craziness and will work with you and your form to help you heal and get back on your feet faster and healthier. Usually only take a couple weeks to get in with him. LMK if you want the info.

Great advice! I think I saw that same pt at tosh in June. I'll have to find his card and go back in.
