Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

"In truth, runners don't race other runners.  They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares.  And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better." Running for His Life by Michael Hall

13.1 in 1:48:52 -- Crappy, no good run today!  I wasn't in the mood to head out, no energy, no one to run with.......got ready and pushed myself today.  I knew I was in trouble by the time that I hit the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon about .7 from my house.  I am usually still chattering from the cold and today I was already in a sweat.  I was wishing I had my short, running shorts on with a tank.

Took off my sweaty hat and gloves at mile 4 at my pit stop at the Smith's on Bengal Blvd. and chewed down half of a Shot Blok.  Mile 5, I started to have stabbing pains in my left ovary.  Guys just don't have the same cyclic problems that women do and it just isn't fair.  I thought I was going to die of pain by mile 6...I had to stop and walk and about 6.5, I almost stopped a car to take me home or to the ER.  I was in so much pain....by mile 7...I thought I was going to die, the cyst must have popped and it started not hurting as bad.  By mile 8.5, the pain was gone.  I have had this happen to me several times, sometimes it is during races.  It seems to happen more when I am pushing myself.  Really,  it is not fair that guys don't have to worry about when the race day is and where their cycle is and how their body will react.

I pushed myself the entire run, I really wanted to come in under 1:50 so that I could beat my last weeks run since I was running the exact same course.  I felt that I was pushing myself too hard.  I thought I was going to puke from mile 11 on.  I kept getting hot and it felt like my legs were going to crack they were hurting so bad.  I think it is interesting how different the exact same run can be one week later.  Last week I pushed myself, but I felt great through the whole run and thought I could run another 5 after I had finished.  This run, I was never so glad to have it be over and I laid on my parents living room floor and thought I was going to puke for about 10 minutes after the run.

I did meet my goal...I ran it in just more than a minute faster than last week. :)

I'm wondering how I ever ran a full marathon after a run like today!

My hub was sick with the stomach flu last night.  I am still feeling sick. I hope it is just from a hard run and I am not getting the flu too! yuck!

A minute faster? It says above that you did it 11 minutes faster. Maybe that's why you're so tired.

If it makes you feel any better I ran 7 today and felt like I couldn't run another step.

That was a fight, and you won.

I've had moments like this for sure. I still sometimes do. Especially lately since I don't run tons of miles everyday the last 2 or 3 months. But you got it done, right on!

It's the hard runs like this that will remind you later that you CAN finish even when the going gets tough. The training miles that count the most are the ones you run after you feel like stopping :)

Tough run for you! Way to stick it out. Thanks for the lesson on the differences between me and women! Seriously, you women do go through crap, so thanks for all that you do and give us dumb men some slack........

Wow, what an accomplishment to

Push through when you felt so crappy!! Being a girl really does stink for so many reasons! At least we get to wear dresses and high heels :)

Way to push through the pain and still beat last week. I hope you don't get sick, the flu is no fun.

From flatlander on Sat, Dec 31, 2011 at 19:33:50 from 76.31.26.153

Really enjoyed this post, and glad you could push through. I agree, it is these kind runs that make a man out of you. (Somehow that didn't come out right.)

From Kelli on Sat, Dec 31, 2011 at 22:57:21 from 71.219.66.129

HEY, a minute faster and feeling like crud-I call that a success even if it did not feel like it! And, I have said this before, we all can do things in races that we can not duplicate on an average every day run!!!

I SO agree with you on the cycle issues that women have to deal with---the fatigue and pain and grumpiness really wreak havoc on running!

I do think there is a nasty stomach bug in the air, i can not seem to shake it. I hope you are not getting it!

I've got to say Steam, your blog entries are always entertaining or educational... This one was a little of both :-) Hope your next run is better!
