Recovering from micro-fracture surgery on my right knee.  I tore the cartilage off of my knee while doing a speed-training run one month before Boston.  Doc gave me a cortisone shot so that I was able to finish Boston.  After the surgery, I was told to never run again. :(

I need help.  I need a running program to help me at Boston.  I have been eating crappy and running crappy.  All of you runners that have had years of experience and racing....please post me the tips that have helped you the most.

My husband is so organized and such a list maker that it can drive me crazy at times.  I don't like to be so organized that I live my life by a list.  I prefer to be spontaneous....I do make lists at times when I keep forgetting to get something done. ha!

I think, if I want to get a 3:30 for Boston, I am really going to have to discipline myself and work and live on a schedule that will get me there.

I don't know if it is the weather or time of year, but I have not been feeling like eating anything healthy.  I just can't eat a salad and veggies everyday.  Lately, I have been living off of a handful of raw almonds and organic raisins that I throw in a ziplock and eat as I am driving around.  I do eat an orange a day and drink milk....but, mostly I live off of Diet Pepsi.....sad, I know.  I was eating great during the summer and now I just don't want to! I do drink a protein shake before I head our for a run and take some beans or bloks if I am running long.

Help!

Send me your email address to dschwalm@yahoo.com. I will email you a couple of schedules that will help you stay on track.

As for eating, I think once you start running consistently you will get hungry enough that you will eat. I found after my most recent marathon my appetite really went down when I stopped running so much.

Sorry...I'm no help with this one :-( When you need encouragment...Let me know, that's my specialty!

You need to eat more Dunford donuts.

From JD on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 14:00:25 from 70.96.78.149

i agree with Scott. there appears to be a strong correlation between the consumption of donuts and an abundance of energy for quality running. better put Dunford donuts on your list. :-)

Man, you guys are great help! That fellow blogger...... OREO.... I think that must be good training food. Slowjoe or should I say Fastjoe told me that he runs consistent miles during the week and is good about throwing a good long hard tempo run in every week or two. His speed speaks for itself! With the diet, I think I will make another smart comment here....... Vanilla wafers treat me quite well. Mix in a Vanilla Coke and you should be good to go. Lose the Diet Pepsi...that will kill ya.

From Steam8 on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 17:14:37 from 166.70.55.77

Thanks for all your funniness! I am unfortunately on a donut diet! Cutting out processed foods and white flour.... I have got back down to 108.5! I am almost back to my regular running weight.

I guess I need to head over to the high school track and run repeats once a week. I have a hill I can run repeats on that is in my neighborhood. I just wish I had more energy! I am just so tired all of the time. :(

Trying to lose weight and run well is near impossible for me. I always have to choose what I want more, to be a few pounds lighter, or run the way I want to. I usually choose to run. You just need to remember that you run because you love it :)

From DLTheo on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 20:25:18 from 155.130.107.41

You need to do a fartlek workout. It would fit your spontaenous character better than a track workout. You just run how you feel and throw in surges of varying lenghts and speeds every now and then.

I've been doing these for a few weeks now. I do a mid-length run, like 10-12 miles, and start the fartlek in the second half, when I'm already somewhat tired. I don't set any goals of how many or what lengths. I just think, "hmm, I need to throw in a couple short surges now". About the only rules I have is that I try to surge on hills.

Where's Burt when we need a goodplease keep your language cleanjoke? My advice is to give up the diet pepsi, it's carbonated poison.

From Lily on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 21:10:41 from 67.199.178.210

Amy I stopped drinking carbonation about 7 years ago. Haven't looked back ( I was severely addicted to Dr. Pepper) It hampers with lung function and a host of other things.

You could always hit up my sports nutritionist. She can plan healthy meals for you while also keeping your weight where you want it? It's not expensive either.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 21:13:45 from 24.18.125.122

Lily, Kym needs your help getting off Dr. Pepper. I swear that stuff is like crack.

From Lily on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 21:25:47 from 74.82.64.32

HA HA! It really is. So pitiful.

From Dan on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 22:28:02 from 24.209.83.20

If you want to run slower at Boston, I will chat with ya the whole run lol. :) I am on a mission to recovery, DH has some great info, I'd check his stuff.

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 23:12:48 from 71.219.84.120

I have done extensive research on the side effects of soda (and quit for years myself) and it is all bogus. If you like it, drink it! As long as it is diet so you do not have to worry about the calories....no worries! Just make sure to drink some good stuff too (like plenty of water!)

I think you are doing great, no worries! I am not an expert, but I think you have to find what works for you and what you like...it is just different for everyone.

Teena does have a really good Boston hill workout for the treadmill, if you can tolerate a treadmill run.

Helpful, huh? You could run with me. ;o) I will come over there, although sometimes I think your air looks yuckier from my side of the valley. What does our air look like from your side?

Now, go drink a diet Pepsi, have a small donut, and smile. Life is to freakin' short to stress over every little calorie. You look fabulous, you can run faster and farther than most, you are healthy and injury free finally, so ENJOY LIFE. ;o)

From flatlander on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 23:59:10 from 210.71.190.43

I like Kelli's answer, but DH is very smart. So confusing.

From Lysa on Fri, Jan 06, 2012 at 13:06:28 from 67.166.122.134

I agree with Kelli. Life is too short. Enjoy some sweets once in awhile and have some fun! Oh and drink up!!

From Dorsimus on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 15:54:17 from 67.2.26.13

So what you're saying is that you are roughly the size of my right leg. :)

Amen to what Kelli said. My general eating/diet advice is "Try to eat more good stuff and less bad stuff". Extremes to either side are usually very hard to maintain, and are no fun! :)

As a side note, one easy change I made was to switch to Almond milk. Less calories, less fat, no cholesterol, and MORE calcium. Tastes fine (the chocolate is really good), I've never been huge milk 'drinker' anyway, but I use it for everything I would milk - cereal, cooking, hot chocolate and the like.

From Kelli on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:34:40 from 71.219.84.120

Vanilla almond milk is delicious. ;o)

From Steam8 on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:42:37 from 166.70.55.77

I do like the vanilla almond milk, but I eat a lot of almonds almost every day.

I love milk. It is my treat at night when I have a nice hot mug of it before bed!

I've been eating more. I just have read about racing weight and how it is better to be lean so that you can run faster...but, when you aren't eating a whole lot, you don't have any energy to run! go figure!

From DLTheo on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 22:03:17 from 76.28.161.119

I've heard estimates of 1-2 seconds/mile faster for every pound lost. Obviously there is a limit to how far that will work as there is such a thing as 'too skinny'. And, like you say, if you don't eat enough your energy is lower and you won't run well.
